The Steelers let Lambert-Smith fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. Somebody in the 229th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the No. 196 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They are betting Pegues proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On the needs board they went 4 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In slot 21 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe in the 83rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
They liked Brashard Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick156
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They talked themselves into JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 18, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick229
Rnd7
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith at the 229th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
