Draft Grade — Steelers

FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Steelers to a D-. Somebody took the Steelers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Slaughter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
No edge and no loss on Gennings Dunker in the 20th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick52
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at the 52nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick59
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jake Slaughter adds an offensive lineman and leaves edge rusher, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick78
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Malik Muhammad. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick84
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange at pick 84 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92
Rnd3
Whit Weeks
A tidy little value on Whit Weeks in Round 3, Pick 28, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick99
Rnd3
Earl Little Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Earl Little Jr. at slot 99, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick120
Rnd4
Carson Beck
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Carson Beck at No. 120 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jyaire Hill
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jyaire Hill. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick159
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick214
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They paid sticker price for Trey Zuhn III in No. 214, and that is fine. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
