A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bengals to a D. The rest of the league had time to spare on Joe Milton III; the Bengals did not wait, grabbing him 85 spots ahead at slot 115.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. However the rest shakes out, Mitchell at that price is a win they earned. Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In pick No. 3 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In the 25th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 17 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Circle this one: Kool-Aid McKinstry at No. 72 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80
Rnd3
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in the 80th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick88
Rnd3
Trey Benson
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in pick 88. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick90
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Theo Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Xavier Thomas
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in No. 97 says they were not listening. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick103
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
The board had cheaper options than Leonard Taylor III at slot 103, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick115
Rnd4
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at the 115th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at pick 149 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
