Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB-
The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. There is reaching, and then there is Eric Gentry at pick No. 230. The Texans jumped the board by 117 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
They banked enough surplus on Slaughter to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In pick 23 they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Anthony Hill Jr. in slot 41. The roster fit checks out.
Pick47
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane in pick No. 47 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick53
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at Round 2, Pick 21. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick54
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
They paid a round early for Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 54th overall pick, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick66
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
The board had cheaper options than A.J. Haulcy at No. 66, and it noticed. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick84
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at the 84th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick116
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
This one needs a full-page explanation: Derrick Moore in pick No. 116, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick119
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at pick 119 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick155
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at No. 155 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick198
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
No edge and no loss on Lee Hunter in slot 198; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
A wild overpay on Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Barion Brown
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Barion Brown. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
