The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent Round 5, Pick 9 on Cobee Bryant, a name most had 32 spots down the list. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

They banked enough surplus on Harvey to cover a lot of smaller sins. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Somehow Kenneth Grant was still sitting there in the 39th overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.

Taking Jalon Walker in pick No. 41 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.

A straight-up fair deal on JT Tuimoloau at slot 43, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
