Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA FutureA-
More right than wrong for the Commanders, and a B+ to prove it.

The Commanders went off the board in a big way for James Smith, 43 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Washington at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Adding Terence Steele by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick43 Rnd2 Anthony Hill Jr.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Anthony Hill Jr.. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick47 Rnd2 Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at the 47th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick82 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
A tidy bit of business in No. 82, where A'Mauri Washington graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick86 Rnd3 Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kenyatta Jackson Jr. in slot 86, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick112 Rnd4 Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick152 Rnd5 CJ Baxter
Nice patience on CJ Baxter, who had no business lasting to the 152nd overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick179 Rnd5 Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner in pick No. 179 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick192 Rnd6 James Smith
James Smith in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick195 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at No. 195 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick204 Rnd6 DeAndre Moore Jr.
DeAndre Moore Jr. in pick 204 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick225 Rnd7 Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford at Round 7, Pick 10 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick229 Rnd7 Shamar Easter
No edge and no loss on Shamar Easter in slot 229; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
