The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 54 spots for Khristian Boyd, and value like that does not grow back.

The Jones pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
