FutureA
Grand theft in the Round 7 slot: the Patriots steal Fidone II and grade out a A-. The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Adding Jeff Okudah by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Reaching for Zabel left real value on the table behind him.
Bottom line, with Grey Zabel leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In the 25th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in Round 2, Pick 6 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell slid further than he should have, and slot 49 is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kaleb Johnson in pick 58. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick No. 69 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick77
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
Value with a capital V on Elic Ayomanor in the 77th overall pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick81
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Good price on Elijah Arroyo in pick No. 81, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at the 106th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick144
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
They took Trevor Etienne at par in Round 5, Pick 6, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jason Marshall Jr.
A tidy bit of business in the 217th overall pick, where Jason Marshall Jr. graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick220
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II at slot 220 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
Fair-plus on Jermari Harris, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
