Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Saints a B. The Saints spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kevin Winston Jr., the No. 96 name on the board, in Round 4, Pick 29. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The cost of the Truss reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the 9th pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Mykel Williams
Mykel Williams at slot 40 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in pick 71 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick93
Rnd3
Quinn Ewers
Quinn Ewers at slot 93 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick112
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
They reached into another round for Rylie Mills, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
They will replay Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 131 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick184
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ollie Gordon II at No. 184 is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick248
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A premium they did not need to pay, Hayden Conner a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick254
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
A big swing on Xavier Truss at the 254th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
