FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bears to a C+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 45 spots for Julian Fleming, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
They banked enough surplus on Fannin Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Hit on Omarion Hampton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Steal is underselling it; Omarion Hampton at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick41
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in No. 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
They barely believed it either: Harold Fannin Jr. still on the board at pick No. 72. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick147
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at the 147th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick193
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in slot 193 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at pick 209 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick233
Rnd7
Julian Fleming
Julian Fleming at the 233rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick240
Rnd7
Elijhah Badger
A big swing on Elijhah Badger at Round 7, Pick 24, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick256
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
They took Garrett Dellinger at par in pick 256, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
