Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Drew Kendall in pick 238. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

Porter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In No. 4 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick38 Rnd2 Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick69 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
They liked Ozzy Trapilo enough to skip the value, taking him in the 69th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick77 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins is a better player than Round 3, Pick 13 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick114 Rnd4 Darien Porter
The board fumbled Darien Porter all the way to slot 114, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick144 Rnd5 Malachi Moore
A tidy little value on Malachi Moore in pick 144, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick163 Rnd5 Logan Brown
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Logan Brown graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick217 Rnd7 Jarquez Hunter
Jarquez Hunter at the 217th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cam Jackson
They paid a round early for Cam Jackson in pick No. 220, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick238 Rnd7 Drew Kendall
They left a pile of value on the table to take Drew Kendall this early at the 238th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
