A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Malachi Lawrence, taking him 21 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In pick No. 27 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Josiah Trotter
A straight-up fair deal on Josiah Trotter at pick 58, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick95
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
A tidy little value on Ja'Kobi Lane in No. 95, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick127
Rnd4
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at the 127th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the 133rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Beau Stephens
No edge and no loss on Beau Stephens in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick169
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
Kaleb Proctor at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick171
Rnd5
Marlin Klein
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marlin Klein. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
