FutureA
The 49ers let Trotter fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Josiah Trotter had no business being available in pick No. 89, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick59
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Michael Taaffe at the 59th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick89
Rnd3
Josiah Trotter
Josiah Trotter in pick 89 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick102
Rnd4
Jack Endries
Jack Endries in Round 4, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick127
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
Nothing to complain about; Keylan Rutledge went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at No. 133 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick135
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
Hezekiah Masses at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick138
Rnd4
Logan Jones
Nice patience on Logan Jones, who had no business lasting to slot 138. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick163
Rnd5
Reggie Virgil
Good price on Reggie Virgil in the 163rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick165
Rnd5
Nadame Tucker
Nadame Tucker at No. 165 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick174
Rnd5
Zane Durant
No edge and no loss on Zane Durant in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
They paid sticker price for Eric McAlister in the 185th overall pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick189
Rnd6
Harrison Wallace III
A straight-up fair deal on Harrison Wallace III at pick 189, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick219
Rnd7
Jimmy Rolder
No drama and no debate, Jimmy Rolder went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 3. It fills a real need, too.
Pick223
Rnd7
Miller Moss
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Miller Moss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
