Draft Grade — 49ers

The Jones reach set a tone the 49ers could not shake: F. Somebody took the 49ers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Reaching for Jones left real value on the table behind him.
Jones at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with running back still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In the 4th pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In No. 27 they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Value with a capital V on Xavier Worthy in pick 63, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
They paid a round early for Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 31, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick124
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 124 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at slot 131 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick133
Rnd4
Kalen King
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kalen King adds a cornerback and leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick176
Rnd6
Trente Jones
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trente Jones well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 211 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
The board had Jared Wiley higher than the 215th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
A clean, defensible pick in slot 251 with a little surplus value in Jordan Whittington. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
