The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D+ tells the story. The 49ers did not so much draft Charles Turner III as overpay for him, 46 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
That Jones pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In No. 28 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
They reached into another round for Javon Foster, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124
Rnd4
Christian Jones
A reach for Christian Jones in the 124th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick131
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
Good price on Isaac Guerendo in slot 131, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Taking Elijah Jones in pick 133 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at No. 176. The roster fit checks out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Edefuan Ulofoshio
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Edefuan Ulofoshio. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Value with a capital V on Jaylan Ford in slot 215, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick251
Rnd7
Charles Turner III
Charles Turner III at Round 7, Pick 31 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
