A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B-.

The 49ers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 6, Pick 40 on Jowon Briggs a full 54 spots early. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

The Wilson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Newton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back, quarterback and other spots still on the board.

For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

They bypassed pressing needs at running back, quarterback and other spots to take Josh Newton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
