FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Joshua Cephus at Round 6, Pick 34 is 45 spots clear of where he belonged.
They banked enough surplus on McClellan to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jordan Morgan
In pick 31 they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Dominick Puni
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dominick Puni in the 63rd pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at No. 94 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick98
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
They paid a round early for Andru Phillips in slot 98, more than the board wanted. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick125
Rnd4
Christian Jones
A conviction pick on Christian Jones at Round 4, Pick 25 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
They reached into another round for Jordan Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176
Rnd6
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at pick 176 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick209
Rnd6
Joshua Cephus
A wild overpay on Joshua Cephus in No. 209, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214
Rnd6
Sheridan Jones
The board had cheaper options than Sheridan Jones at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
You do not let a running back like Jase McClellan reach pick No. 215 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick256
Rnd7
Solomon Byrd
A reach on Solomon Byrd in the 256th pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
