If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 176 is 53 spots clear of where he belonged.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. With tight end and linebacker unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Jones at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
