The 49ers jumped the board for Bell and paid for it: F. The 49ers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 3, Pick 31 on Jaheim Bell a full 72 spots early. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Melton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and quarterback.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
In No. 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, reach and all. More want than need.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Melton
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 63 on Max Melton with interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in pick 94 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
They left a pile of value on the table to take Luke McCaffrey this early at slot 124. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick131
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 131st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
They did well to land Isaac Guerendo in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick176
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 176th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylan Ford in No. 211. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tatum Bethune
A reach for Tatum Bethune in Round 6, Pick 40; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
Fair-plus on Jordan Whittington, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
