Grand theft in slot 255: the 49ers steal Milum and grade out a D+. Somebody in Round 7, Pick 37 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Wyatt Milum, the No. 34 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jahdae Barron
You do not let a cornerback like Jahdae Barron reach the 43rd overall pick and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick75
Rnd3
Walter Nolen
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 99 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112
Rnd4
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at slot 112 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jalon Walker
The board fumbled Jalon Walker all the way to pick No. 118, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick138
Rnd4
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the 138th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick139
Rnd4
Marcus Mbow
Taking Marcus Mbow in pick 139 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189
Rnd6
Quinshon Judkins
They will replay Quinshon Judkins at Round 6, Pick 11 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick228
Rnd7
Gunnar Helm
They barely believed it either: Gunnar Helm still on the board at No. 228. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at slot 232 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Wyatt Milum
Wyatt Milum in the 255th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
