Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent the 138th pick on Teddye Buchanan, a name the board had a full 112 spots lower. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Starks.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In pick No. 14 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in Round 2, Pick 11 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick75
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins slid further than he should have, and the 75th pick is lovely value for the running back. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
A straight-up fair deal on Mason Taylor at No. 76, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at slot 100 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
A reach on Jeffrey Bassa in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick117
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
A wild overpay on Oluwafemi Oladejo in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick138
Rnd4
Teddye Buchanan
A real head-scratcher, Teddye Buchanan in pick 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick147
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Nice patience on Hollin Pierce, who had no business lasting to the 147th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue at the 160th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick189
Rnd6
CJ West
A tidy little value on CJ West in Round 6, Pick 13, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
They read the board right and Craig Woodson was the payoff at slot 227. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Roc Taylor
No drama and no debate, Roc Taylor went about where he belonged in pick No. 249. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
No edge and no loss on Jaylin Smith in No. 252; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
