Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Johnson: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Emmett Johnson got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at the 133rd pick. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 27th pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 58 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick127
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
A quiet steal in pick No. 127: Michael Trigg for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Pick133
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
They will replay Emmett Johnson at Round 4, Pick 33 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139
Rnd4
Will Lee III
They let Will Lee III come to them and pounced at slot 139. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
