The Bears found their guy under center in McCarthy: B-. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Wilson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Joe Alt
No drama and no debate, Joe Alt went about where he belonged in pick 6. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick9
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 9th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick34
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
They took Braden Fiske at par in Round 2, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick47
Rnd2
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland at pick No. 47 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick118
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanor Bortolini this early at slot 118. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick133
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at No. 133 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick160
Rnd5
Ryan Flournoy
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ryan Flournoy in the 160th pick, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
