Grand theft in pick No. 50: the Lions steal Echoles and grade out a A-. You build a draft on nights like this. Will Echoles had no business being available in the 50th pick, and the Lions did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The cost of the Faison reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The Lions paired the rookies with proven help, Alex Anzalone leading the way. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In the end it comes back to Will Echoles, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick50
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Somehow Will Echoles was still sitting there in pick 50, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick56
Rnd2
Sammy Brown
They robbed the room for Sammy Brown here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick105
Rnd4
Iapani Laloulu
Iapani Laloulu at No. 105 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick116
Rnd4
Evan Tengesdahl
They barely believed it either: Evan Tengesdahl still on the board at pick No. 116. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Dylan Raiola
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dylan Raiola. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick143
Rnd5
J'Koby Williams
They paid sticker price for J'Koby Williams in the 143rd overall pick, and that is fine. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick155
Rnd5
Eli Bowen
Eli Bowen in slot 155 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick164
Rnd5
Mateen Ibirogba
Mateen Ibirogba slid further than he should have, and the 164th pick is lovely value for the edge rusher. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186
Rnd6
King Mack
King Mack slipping to pick 186 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick198
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They paid a round early for Andrew Rappleyea in slot 198, more than the board wanted. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jordan Faison
They jumped the gun on Jordan Faison, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
