Larceny in the 214th overall pick lands the 49ers a B-, Harden and all. Somebody in Round 6, Pick 39 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Myles Harden, the No. 184 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every board in the league had Goncalves lower, and that gap is the story. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Kamari Lassiter
In No. 31 they get a lockdown presence outside, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
No drama and no debate, Christian Haynes went about where he belonged in pick No. 63. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
They paid up for Matt Goncalves at slot 94 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick98
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 35, with Bucky Irving worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125
Rnd4
Marcus Harris
Marcus Harris in the 125th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jamari Thrash
Jamari Thrash at pick 132 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick176
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
A quiet steal in the 209th overall pick: Jared Wiley for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick214
Rnd6
Myles Harden
Taking Myles Harden in No. 214 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick215
Rnd6
Eric Watts
Eric Watts at the 215th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick249
Rnd7
Evan Williams
Fair-plus on Evan Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
