FutureB+
The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Oluwafemi Oladejo at pick 50, a reach of 91 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick No. 23 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50
Rnd2
Oluwafemi Oladejo
They reached into another round for Oluwafemi Oladejo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick52
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in the 52nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick75
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick82
Rnd3
Isaiah Bond
Isaiah Bond in pick 82 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick83
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in the 83rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Chris Paul Jr.. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
No drama and no debate, Jared Wilson went about where he belonged in slot 100. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. at Round 4, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137
Rnd4
Trevor Etienne
A premium they did not need to pay, Trevor Etienne a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd4
Logan Brown
Logan Brown in pick 138 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Elijah Roberts well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick159
Rnd5
CJ West
CJ West at the 159th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jake Briningstool
The board had cheaper options than Jake Briningstool at the 160th overall pick, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick172
Rnd5
Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
They talked themselves into Teddye Buchanan at slot 223, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick234
Rnd7
Ethan Downs
A big swing on Ethan Downs at No. 234, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Roc Taylor
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roc Taylor. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
A wild overpay on Jalen Travis in pick No. 249, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
