FutureB
The Bills won the night they stopped Nelson from sliding. Grade: B. You build a draft on nights like this. Jack Nelson had no business being available in the 171st overall pick, and the Bills did the only sane thing and turned in the card. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The cost of the Burks reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at Round 1, Pick 32 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Pick57
Rnd2
Deone Walker
A reach on Deone Walker in pick No. 57; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jalen Royals
No edge and no loss on Jalen Royals in No. 62; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick108
Rnd4
Darien Porter
You do not let a cornerback like Darien Porter reach the 108th overall pick and blink. They did not. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick113
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Alexander in slot 113, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jordan James
Jordan James at pick 131 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
Steal is underselling it; Jack Nelson at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick175
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong at the 175th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick179
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at pick No. 179 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
They paid a round early for Alex Mastromanno in Round 6, Pick 28, more than the board wanted. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick254
Rnd7
Deion Burks
Deion Burks in the 254th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
