Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A franchise passer in McCarthy headlines a C- weekend for the Bears.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 67 spots for Tanor Bortolini, and value like that does not grow back.

Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In pick 8 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In No. 9 they get a long-term answer under center, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in Round 3, Pick 11 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick79 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 79 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick122 Rnd4 Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini in the 122nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick196 Rnd6 Eric Watts
Eric Watts at slot 196 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
