Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureD
Daniels is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a F. The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Jaden Shirden, 85 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
It is not that Colson is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left cornerback open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In pick No. 4 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick8
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In No. 8 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick13
Rnd1
JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
They paid a round early for Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 34th pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick35
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at the 36th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick40
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Edgerrin Cooper well ahead of where he belonged. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks at pick 67 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
They jumped the gun on Marshawn Kneeland, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick102
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A wild overpay on Cade Stover in pick No. 102, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Junior Colson
A curious use of the 103rd pick. Cornerback and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a linebacker in Junior Colson did not.
Pick141
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
They took Jordan Travis at par in the 141st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick142
Rnd5
Moose Muhammad III
A reach on Moose Muhammad III in slot 142; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 181 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick182
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Jones. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jaden Shirden
Jaden Shirden at pick No. 223 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at the 227th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
