A sensible, unshowy class lands the Saints a B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Jawhar Jordan; the Saints did not wait, grabbing him 45 spots ahead at the 174th overall pick.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In slot 19 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
They read the board right and Brian Thomas Jr. was the payoff at pick No. 45. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick51
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in No. 51; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick89
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149
Rnd5
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at the 149th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick167
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joe Milton III. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick169
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
They took Grayson Murphy at par in the 169th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jawhar Jordan
They reached into another round for Jawhar Jordan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick192
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 17 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick200
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at slot 200 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
