Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Williams is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Van Pran pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

That Gentry pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 43 with a little surplus value in Chop Robinson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick74 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
They took Christian Haynes at par in pick No. 74, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in the 75th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick111 Rnd4 Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith is a better player than pick 111 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick122 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
They let Ainias Smith come to them and pounced at No. 122. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick146 Rnd5 LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick256 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Eric Gentry in pick 256. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
