FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Chiefs, and a B to prove it. Everything else got attention, and quarterback got none. That is a strange way for the Chiefs to leave a draft. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They are betting Wingo proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Landing Smith-Wade that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
By-the-book stuff, Troy Franklin at the 26th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick58
Rnd2
Mekhi Wingo
They reached a country mile for Mekhi Wingo at slot 58, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick96
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick114
Rnd4
Junior Colson
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in the 114th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick126
Rnd4
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker in No. 126 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick167
Rnd5
Theo Wease
Theo Wease in pick 167 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at Round 5, Pick 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick175
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade slid further than he should have, and pick No. 175 is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick204
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
A tidy little value on Joshua Gray in slot 204, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Cody Schrader
No drama and no debate, Cody Schrader went about where he belonged in No. 237. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick247
Rnd7
Ja'Had Carter
Ja'Had Carter in the Round 7 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
