FutureA+
The Saints bled value on every deal, hence the C+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Saints did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
If Bortolini pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sainristil.
Hit on Patrick Paul and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick45
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the 45th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick101
Rnd4
Mike Sainristil
Taking Mike Sainristil in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith in pick 103 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick149
Rnd5
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
They took Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at par in the 149th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick167
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
They read the board right and Braelon Allen was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 31. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick169
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ty'Ron Hopper at slot 169 is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick174
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson at No. 174 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick192
Rnd6
Eric Watts
Eric Watts in pick No. 192 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick200
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at No. 200 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
