Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesC FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Saints: B-.

Nobody had John Emery Jr. this high, and it is not close. The Saints reached 78 spots to get him at No. 253. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Saints indulged a want in Stover while a need in edge rusher, cornerback and other spots stayed open.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Jordan Morgan
In pick 32 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45 Rnd2 Byron Murphy II
They paid sticker price for Byron Murphy II in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick64 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick91 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, cornerback and other spots untouched.
Pick136 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha in pick No. 136 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick152 Rnd5 Braelon Allen
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170 Rnd5 Michael Barrett
They liked Michael Barrett enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 170. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick176 Rnd6 De'Corian Clark
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in pick No. 176, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick192 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Josh Proctor at the Round 6 slot. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick253 Rnd7 John Emery Jr.
They talked themselves into John Emery Jr. at pick 253, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
