Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Saints kept it disciplined and banked a B.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Saints took Kobe Baynes at the 170th overall pick, roughly 29 spots before his name belonged.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. The Freeling value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Jeremiyah Love
In pick No. 8 they get a featured back. A real need, handled.
Pick42 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caleb Banks at the 42nd pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick73 Rnd3 Ian Strong
Ian Strong slipping to Round 3, Pick 9 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick132 Rnd4 Niki Prongos
A reach on Niki Prongos in slot 132; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick137 Rnd4 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at pick 137 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148 Rnd5 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
No edge and no loss on Ar'maj Reed-Adams in the 148th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick170 Rnd5 Kobe Baynes
A big swing on Kobe Baynes at the 170th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190 Rnd6 CJ Daniels
A clean, defensible pick in pick 190 with a little surplus value in CJ Daniels. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
