Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
Edwards should have been long gone. The Saints pounced, and earned a B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Donovan Edwards at pick 248 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Jones has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the 40th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick45 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at the 45th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick71 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at pick No. 71, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick82 Rnd3 Elijah Arroyo
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elijah Arroyo at pick 82. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick93 Rnd3 Tai Felton
By-the-book stuff, Tai Felton at slot 93 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick112 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton in Round 4, Pick 10 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117 Rnd4 Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones at No. 117 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo in pick 131 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JJ Pegues. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick248 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Donovan Edwards in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick254 Rnd7 Kevin Jennings
They talked themselves into Kevin Jennings at the 254th pick, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
