Draft Grade — Saints
Overall C+
ValueF NeedB+ TradesA FutureC-
The jury is out on the Saints. For now, C+.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Payton Thorne at No. 169 is 299 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

Landing Riley that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Hit on Tyler Booker and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Tyler Booker
A real head-scratcher, Tyler Booker in the Round 1 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick40 Rnd2 Jack Bech
They talked themselves into Jack Bech at slot 40, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick71 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
No drama and no debate, Mason Taylor went about where he belonged in pick No. 71. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick93 Rnd3 Nick Martin
Nick Martin at Round 3, Pick 29 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick112 Rnd4 Collin Oliver
Collin Oliver in the 112th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131 Rnd4 Donovan Edwards
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Donovan Edwards well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick161 Rnd5 Jay Toia
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jay Toia in the Round 5 slot, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick164 Rnd5 Quincy Riley
The board had Quincy Riley higher than slot 164, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick169 Rnd5 Payton Thorne
Payton Thorne at pick No. 169 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick170 Rnd5 Ahmed Hassanein
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ahmed Hassanein this early at Round 5, Pick 32. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184 Rnd6 Upton Stout
Upton Stout in the 184th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick249 Rnd7 Theo Wease Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Theo Wease Jr. at No. 249 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252 Rnd7 Marcel Brooks
A wild overpay on Marcel Brooks in the 252nd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick253 Rnd7 Steven Parker
A big swing on Steven Parker at pick 253, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254 Rnd7 Tyler Loop
Tyler Loop in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
