Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Saints left with their quarterback, and a D- to match. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Saints shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
So much rides on Shedeur Sanders that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Hancock reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Shedeur Sanders
In the 10th pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Booker
In the 31st overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jordan Hancock
A big swing on Jordan Hancock at Round 2, Pick 10, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Josh Simmons
They paid sticker price for Josh Simmons in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick74
Rnd3
Sebastian Castro
Sebastian Castro at No. 74 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick103
Rnd4
DJ Giddens
No edge and no loss on DJ Giddens in slot 103; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick104
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
A straight-up fair deal on Derrick Moore at pick No. 104, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick106
Rnd4
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at pick 106 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Gabe Jacas
They took Gabe Jacas at par in Round 4, Pick 15, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A reasonable price with a little left over, Davison Igbinosun in the 138th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick170
Rnd6
Zach Rice
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Rice. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
