The Saints did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. The weekend has a hole in the middle of it named cornerback, a need the Saints walked right past. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That Knight Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They are betting Ezeiruaku proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
They liked Donovan Ezeiruaku enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 40. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
A quiet steal in pick 71: Jayden Higgins for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Demetrius Knight Jr. at slot 75 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick93
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Value with a capital V on Ozzy Trapilo in the 93rd pick, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dylan Fairchild. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson at pick No. 112 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick184
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 184th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick248
Rnd7
Dante Trader Jr.
The board had Dante Trader Jr. higher than the 248th overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick254
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway in slot 254 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
