Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Saints were there to profit. Jacob Cowing, the No. 147 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 199th pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Fiske left real value on the table behind him.

On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
