Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesC- FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Xzavier Henderson in Round 7, Pick 22.

The Reed pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Matthew Golden
In the 17th pick they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
A reach for Donovan Ezeiruaku in No. 38; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Donovan Jackson a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Elic Ayomanor
No drama and no debate, Elic Ayomanor went about where he belonged in pick 69. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick77 Rnd3 Zy Alexander
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zy Alexander this early at slot 77. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick81 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant at the 81st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cody Simon
A wild overpay on Cody Simon in No. 106, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144 Rnd5 Andres Borregales
Andres Borregales at the 144th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick171 Rnd5 Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed in slot 220 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xzavier Henderson
A real head-scratcher, Xzavier Henderson in pick 238 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
