FutureA+
The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: B-. The Patriots bet big and early on Xzavier Henderson, 43 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. However the rest shakes out, Royals at that price is a win they earned. Spending an early pick on linebacker with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the 23rd overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
They liked Aireontae Ersery enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 38. It fills a real need, too.
Pick54
Rnd2
Bradyn Swinson
Bradyn Swinson in Round 2, Pick 22 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick69
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
No edge and no loss on Maxwell Hairston in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick77
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
The board had Carson Schwesinger higher than slot 77, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick87
Rnd3
Jalen Royals
Jalen Royals at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cody Simon
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Cody Simon in No. 106 leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots for later.
Pick144
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
Andres Borregales in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick217
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
Steal is underselling it; Tahj Brooks at the 217th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick220
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
A reach on Jermari Harris in pick No. 220; the board had better options right there. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
A wild overpay on Xzavier Henderson in pick 238, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
