Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B+ for the Patriots.

Nobody had Xzavier Henderson this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 43 spots to get him at slot 238. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Fannin Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Luther Burden III
In slot 20 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at the 38th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick45 Rnd2 Kyle Kennard
Value said wait; Kyle Kennard in pick No. 45 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick51 Rnd2 Charles Grant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Charles Grant well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick69 Rnd3 Tre Harris
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tre Harris at pick 69 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick77 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Taking Harold Fannin Jr. in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at Round 4, Pick 4 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick122 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tez Johnson in slot 122, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick144 Rnd5 Andres Borregales
They jumped the gun on Andres Borregales, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick217 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins is a better player than pick No. 217 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jermari Harris
A premium they did not need to pay, Jermari Harris a notch or two before his time. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick232 Rnd7 Corey Kiner
Corey Kiner in the 232nd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson in the 238th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
