FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Patriots. The war room fell hard for Xzavier Henderson, and it showed at pick 238: 43 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gadsden II. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Simon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots still on the board. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka at the 23rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at the 38th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick45
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at No. 45 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick54
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Ezeiruaku at pick No. 54, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick69
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
They paid sticker price for Elic Ayomanor in pick 69, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They paid a round early for Danny Stutsman in slot 77, more than the board wanted. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick87
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm in slot 87 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cody Simon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cody Simon adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick144
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
They liked Andres Borregales enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 144. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick217
Rnd7
Oronde Gadsden II
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to Round 7, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
They barely believed it either: Tahj Brooks still on the board at the 220th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
A tidy little value on Jermari Harris in pick 232, a step better than break-even. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick238
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at the 238th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
