Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB
TradesD-
FutureA+
Sanders should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a C+. Somebody in the 236th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Raheim Sanders, the No. 153 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
If Cameron Williams and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Cameron Williams
In slot 12 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick40
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
No drama and no debate, Benjamin Morrison went about where he belonged in No. 40. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson in the 44th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick71
Rnd3
Bradyn Swinson
A edge rusher of that caliber at pick 71 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick77
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
A wild overpay on Luke Kandra in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick107
Rnd4
Dontay Corleone
They took Dontay Corleone at par in pick No. 107, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Circle this one: Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 5, Pick 5 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick219
Rnd7
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo in the 219th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick222
Rnd7
Logan Jones
They robbed the room for Logan Jones here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick236
Rnd7
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders in No. 236 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
