FutureA
The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Charles Grant went at pick 45, a good 45 picks before the board was ready. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In the end it comes back to Matthew Golden, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
No drama and no debate, Matthew Golden went about where he belonged in the 14th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Mike Green
A slide stopped in the 38th pick, with Mike Green worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick45
Rnd2
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at pick No. 45 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tre Harris at slot 69. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
The board had Donovan Jackson higher than No. 77, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick106
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zy Alexander in the Round 4 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick144
Rnd5
Cody Simon
Cody Simon at slot 144 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
They liked Jermari Harris enough to skip the value, taking him in the 217th overall pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick220
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
A wild overpay on Ty Hamilton in pick No. 220, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
They reached into another round for Xzavier Henderson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
