Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureB-
The Patriots won the night they stopped Fitzgerald from sliding. Grade: B+. You could see the war room lean forward. Ryan Fitzgerald at the 238th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Jackson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Abdul Carter. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick37
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
A straight-up fair deal on Matthew Golden at the 37th pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick38
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in pick 38, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick69
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
Nice patience on Zy Alexander, who had no business lasting to No. 69. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick77
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in Round 3, Pick 13 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick104
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Somehow Malachi Moore was still sitting there in pick No. 104, and they pounced on premier safety value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick143
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
You do not let a linebacker like Danny Stutsman reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick212
Rnd6
Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at the 212th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick217
Rnd7
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick220
Rnd7
Cam Skattebo
Taking Cam Skattebo in pick No. 220 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick238
Rnd7
Ryan Fitzgerald
The board fumbled Ryan Fitzgerald all the way to No. 238, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
