Zvada should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Dominic Zvada, the No. 95 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 238.
They will need Henderson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the 6th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
No drama and no debate, Matthew Golden went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick38
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
They went early on Benjamin Morrison in pick No. 38, and the value did not follow. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick69
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in the 69th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick77
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
The board had cheaper options than Tez Johnson at slot 77, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick104
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at Round 4, Pick 3 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick143
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at No. 143 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick217
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
A real head-scratcher, Xzavier Henderson in pick 217 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick220
Rnd7
Kobe King
Circle this one: Kobe King at the 220th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
You do not let a specialist like Dominic Zvada reach pick No. 238 and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
