The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Skattebo: B. Somebody in the 217th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 110 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They will need Kandra to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Jonah Savaiinaea
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden in pick 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick45
Rnd2
Trey Amos
They jumped the gun on Trey Amos, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick69
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra in pick No. 69 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in the 77th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at Round 4, Pick 3 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick143
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in No. 143 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick217
Rnd7
Cam Skattebo
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick220
Rnd7
Lander Barton
You do not let a linebacker like Lander Barton reach pick No. 220 and blink. They did not. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jared Wilson in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
