Nobody dealt better than the Cowboys this weekend: B-. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Cowboys were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
They are betting Carmona proves the room right and everyone else wrong. It is not that Mesidor is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That Inniss pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
Mansoor Delane at Round 1, Pick 14 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick21
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
In the 21st overall pick they get juice off the edge, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
Pick28
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In pick 28 they get a three-down second-level presence at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
The board had Sonny Styles higher than No. 49, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick79
Rnd3
Xavier Chaplin
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Chaplin this early at the 79th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick114
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick115
Rnd4
Akheem Mesidor
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with Akheem Mesidor while clear needs at quarterback, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick122
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Derrick Moore, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick153
Rnd5
Isaac Smith
Isaac Smith at pick 153 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick179
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Nwankpa. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick181
Rnd5
Lee Hunter
A reach on Lee Hunter in No. 181; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick225
Rnd7
Barion Brown
They took Barion Brown at par in slot 225, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brandon Inniss at Round 7, Pick 36. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
